Although receiving a divorce petition is scary, there is usually time to act and react. Being served with a divorce petition may be something that you have been expecting or it may be a complete surprise to you.  Either way, it can be scary when you are served with legal documents.  The best thing that you can do is to stay calm.  Here are a few suggestions that you may find helpful once you have been served with divorce papers.

First Suggestion: Take a deep breath, calm down, there is no need to act in haste.

Second Suggestion: Even though you may be tempted, don’t contact your spouse right away.  Be patient and wait to contact your spouse until you have a better grasp of what is exactly going on.

Third Suggestion: Sit down (either by yourself or with a Phoenix Divorce Attorney) and read completely through the divorce papers a couple of times.  Your spouse and her attorney have probably asked for everything in the divorce petition you have been served.  This is pretty standard.  Don’t get upset about it.

Fourth Suggestion: Call your family and friends and let them know what has happened.  It’s better that they hear it from you rather than on Facebook or from somebody else, like your spouse.

Fifth Suggestion: If you have children, it is important not to get them in the middle of any marital conflict that you are having with your spouse.  The court will look favorably on not involving the kids, plus, it is better for them not to be put in the middle.

Sixth Suggestion: If you can, take the next day off of work.  Give yourself the time to process the whole situation and plan the next steps.  Get a good night of sleep and get ready for the next day.

Seventh Suggestion: Find yourself a Phoenix, Mesa, or Tucson, Arizona Divorce attorney.  Their are many qualified lawyers and attorneys.  The key is to find one that you are comfortable with and discuss your case.  Most Arizona Divorce Lawyers offer a free consultation and case evaluation.  You have roughly 20 days to respond to the divorce papers so you have to act quickly.
